Four Things Successful Authors Share

August 28th, 2008 by HuthaifasBlog6397

Several years ago, Anastasia Suen sent us this note, which still appears on our web site: “Yesterday’s mail brought copies of Hodgepodge, with my poem on the back page, and an acceptance letter from Babybug for another poem! My poems in Shoofly will be out in April. ALL these leads came from Children’s Book Insider! Thank you, thank you, thank you!” If you go to Anastasia’s own web site today (www.asuen.com) you’ll see that she’s the author of 78 books, a writing teacher at Southern Methodist University, she leads eight online writing workshops, speaks at numerous conferences, and gets $1000 per day for a full-day school visit ($1500 if she has to travel). We like to think of Anastasia as our own personal CBI-success story, but really we can’t take any of the credit. Anastasia did it because she’s got what it takes to be a prolific, published children’s book author. One thing Anastasia, and other writers like her, has is a certain stick-to-it mentality that says, I want this, I can do this, and I absolutely won’t give up.

My son’s been taking karate for 18 months, and every time he tests for the next rank (he’s up to his blue belt now), fewer kids who started with him as white belts test alongside him. It’s not that Matthew’s necessarily a better athlete than they are, but karate is more important to him. He likes learning the forms, and he enjoys surviving a two hour, physically grueling test knowing that most of his friends would have been flattened in the first 20 minutes. When aspiring writers start identifying themselves as authors, just as Matthew sees himself as a martial artist, they’ve taken that first big step toward success.

But there’s a difference between wanting to see your name on a book, and wanting a career as a children’s book author. Anyone with a few bucks can publish their own story, and many books are perfectly suited to be self-published titles given to family and friends. The career mentality, however, is more complex. Check out some common characteristics below and see how you measure up:

Humility: When I get emails from people saying, I’m going to be the next Dr. Seuss, I cringe. Confidence is fine, but don’t compare yourself to someone like Dr. Seuss right out of the gate. In fact, don’t compare yourself to anyone. Work on finding your own style and voice. And know that you don’t have to become a literary institution to be a success. Learning to write well is a lifelong process, and the writers who get published understand that each manuscript, whether it sells or not, teaches them something. They’re not afraid to be critiqued or edited. They’ve put their heart into a book or article, and then removed their ego. They understand that if their critique group or editor says a plot is too predictable, it’s far better to chuck the storyline and start over than to fight to preserve a mediocre manuscript. And they’re grateful for the input that saved them from dozens of rejection letters.

Will Work for Resum?: Successful authors know that their query letters are more impressive if they can list some publishing credits. They’re willing to write for little or no money at first, because the experience of meeting a deadline and working with an editor is invaluable. They may decide to sell one story to a magazine that buys all rights so their next story can be sold to a bigger publication that purchases first rights only. They’ll submit to local magazines, regional publishers and small presses as they perfect their manuscripts intended for larger, national publishers. Well-published authors don’t overlook any market that might be right for a particular work. And when you’re just starting out, seeing your byline in a local parenting publication is just as satisfying as appearing in Highlights for Children.

‘Tensity: Matthew’s karate teacher urges him to be intense about his practice, and Matthew’s dubbed this mindset ‘tensity. The prolific writers I know think the same way. Though most have families and jobs, they live, eat and breathe writing. Any spare moment is devoted to working on a manuscript. Free weekends are spent at conferences and workshops. When they’re not writing, they’re reading children’s books. As soon as they get one manuscript in the mail, they start the next one. In fact, supersuccessful authors work on several manuscripts at once. If they’re uninspired to revise a scene from their novel, they’ll write a query for an article idea or do research for a picture book biography.

You don’t have to maintain this level of activity to become published. Most writers don’t. But if you want to make a living as a children’s book author, if you want your web site to list 50 or more books in print, then it’s practically required.

Plays the Field: Well-published authors don’t limit themselves to one genre. They’ll write picture books, novels, short stories for magazines, poetry, nonfiction, and material for adult markets such as parenting magazines or writing newsletters. After one book comes out they don’t wait for their editor to ask for another manuscript; they create what inspires them and if it’s not right for their current editor, they market it someplace else. In fact, it’s more difficult to get widely-published if you only write one type of book. A publisher carries a limited number of titles per season, and the editor of your middle grade novel might not appreciate your having another novel for the same age group come out with a different publisher simultaneously. But a magazine article or nonfiction picture book won’t compete with a book for older kids, and still gets your name in front of reviewers and book buyers.

Successful authors don’t dabble in writing now and then, they embrace it and do whatever it takes to get published because it’s what they want more than anything else. So dive in, work with ‘tensity, and send us a quote for our web site when you hit the jackpot.

How To Really Save Planet Earth: A Test About Al Gore

August 28th, 2008 by HuthaifasBlog6397

If you really want to bring the Earth back from the brink of disaster, who should you be listening to?

A. Al Gore of Live Earth and An Inconvenient Truth
B. Diane Sawyer of ABC’s Seven Ways to Help Save the World
C. Michael Brune of Rain Forest Action Network
D. Conservative commentator Glenn Beck of CNN Headline News

An Inconvenient Truth left out the most inconvenient truth of all, and the Live Earth concerts were an environmental joke (and the music was really bad, too). Ms. Sawyer’s suggestion to cut back on toilet paper is a bit of poo itself. Then, with a golden opportunity to enlighten and empower Americans, Michael Brune of the Rain Forest Action Network only highlighted the problem with even our environmental groups. Therefore, and by way of deductive reasoning, the answer must be … and is … (drum roll, please) … Glenn Beck. Yep, that’s right. Glenn Beck, the ultra-conservative, speaks out on CNN Headline News while interviewing Michael Brune and tells people how to really save the environment.

In speaking about the Live Earth concerts, Glenn said, There’s nowhere in here about vegetarianism or anything like that, that would make a real impact on the environment … It is animal gases that produce more CO2 than any of the cars we’re driving.

To which Michael Brune disagreed. Michael? HUH? Earth to Michael … Come in, Michael.

The fact is, a HUGE portion of our environmental problems come from eating meat and dairy (and from producing meat and dairy), and Glenn Beck, of all people, hit the nail square on the head. Global warming, rain forest destruction, coral reefs dying off, topsoil erosion, poisoned water and polluted air are all a result of animal agriculture, and everybody - including our environmental groups - refuses to connect these dots. Thanks, Glenn, for doing what Al Gore, Diane Sawyer and even Michael Brune have refused to do.

A report released by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization last November charged that raising livestock produced more greenhouse gases globally than the international transportation system. www.crosswalk.com/news/11543779/ http://www.crosswalk.com/news/11543779/

The U.N. report tells of a tragedy in the making on everyone’s dinner plates, and it doesn’t stop there; global warming concerns are now keeping kids up at night. www.gm.tv/index.cfm?articleid=24717 http://www.gm.tv/index.cfm?articleid=24717

Kids, and all Americans, need to know that they are the empowered ones. This is not a political or governmental issue. WE, each of us, has a hand in global warming, and, therefore, its cure. If we stop eating animals and their secretions, we will stop killing the planet. It is as simple as that. Concerts galore, one million TV shows on the Top Seven Ways … and pseudo-environmentalists be damned. Without veganism for all people, nothing else can possibly save our doomed planet. The great news is, if we each switch to eating a vegan diet, we will no longer have to save the planet. Veganism allows the planet to save itself.

Major kudos to Glenn Beck.

Jeff Popick, known as The Vegan Sage, is a keen visionary & a leading expert on the diverse effects our diet has on our health & environment. Are You Commiting These 10 Brutal Mistakes?

August 28th, 2008 by HuthaifasBlog6397

I’ve been scammed plenty of times.

I just lost $50 on a type at home scam!!

Not to mention the 5 years, $1000’s of dollars and blood, sweat and tears, I put into trying to make money with my website.

By now, you’d think I could smell a scam a mile away.

Right?

Well, not always.

It seems that the smarter I get the smarter the scammers seem to get.

But when I decided that I wanted to work from home, I knew that I didn’t want to pay way to much money to get a job.

Nor did I wish to have to recruit tens or hundreds of people in order to get paid for whatever job I did get.

All I wanted was to do a better job than my competition.

You know–like I used to do in the “real” world.

Along the way I discovered that there were a lot of other people, just like me, who were trying to avoid the emotional and financial pain of being robbed, in a phoney scheme.

Over time, I realized that there is no 100-percent, sure-fire way to protect myself.

But I did learn–the hard way–that I could recognize some of the warning signs on the way, and how to minimize the risks of getting burned.

I eventually put my experience to work, started a web site, to help other people who want to work from home.

Following are some tips that I want to share with you so we can flatten your learning curve, and you won’t suffer the same heartache, and frustration that I did………

These tips are easy to follow, and I offer them below with the hope of helping you find a real way to make money online with your website.

1. Don’t pay for an opportunity, they obviously are not in it for the long haul, and have no intention of putting you first.

2. If you find that the company uses language like this in their copy, you should run screaming the other way.

Words like:

matrix, power line, no experience necessary, free information, big money fast, you get the picture, and I am sure you get bombarded by these sleezy tactics every day.

3. Look out for companies that hire “internationally”.

Chances are great that the “company” is really a person who already has an up line, down line, or whatever.

4. Don’t send an SASE (self-addressed, stamped envelope) for further information. If they can’t afford stamps, how are they going to pay YOU?

5. Shy away from 900 numbers, most honest marketers, will provide you with real contact information. Do a who is and do your Due Dilligence

6. Don’t buy courses and materials that the company provides for a price. If you don’t already have the tools for the job, then you probably aren’t qualified for the job.

7. Examine the advertising copy with a fine tooth comb, often time the hook is in small print.

8. Check the track record of the compay, before agreeing to work for it. Your hard-earned pay might end up being the owners’ grocery money, because they didn’t budget their start-up money properly.

9. The Better Business Bureau is a great place to start researching a company. Although companies pay to be listed there, any company that gets complaints will also be listed–for free.

10. Join the forums that relate to your niche, and you will find like minded people who love to expose a scam when they find one. This is a valuable resource alone, will save you a lot of time and trouble.

Don’t balatantly advertise, build relationships and be a helper . Learn to enjoy helping others.

Article by Jeff Davis. Did you find those tips on avoiding scams useful? You can learn a lot more about how to make money with your website here: how-to-make-money-with-your-web-site.com http://how-to-make-money-with-your-web-site.com

Wedding Insurance - Say I Do

August 28th, 2008 by HuthaifasBlog6397

Many brides ask whether or not they should purchase wedding insurance. In my opinion the answer should be an unequivocal Yes. According to TheWeddingReport.com the average cost of a wedding today is more than $26,000. That’s more than some people pay for a car, and you wouldn’t think of not insuring your brand new car, would you? It just makes sense, then, to purchase a wedding insurance policy that will cover many of your wedding costs if you need to postpone or cancel the ceremony and reception. This type of wedding insurance is crucial especially if your cost of rescheduling the wedding will be very high.

Many couples overlook wedding insurance when planning a wedding because they don’t believe they will need it. After all, there is nothing romantic or exciting about wedding insurance and what could possibly go wrong. If you were to ask couples who had their wedding and reception planned in New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina hit, what advice do you think they would give you. Now a hurricane is an extreme weather condition, but wedding insurance provides coverage for just such a weather event. Wedding insurance, however, will not cover postponement of your wedding due to a rainy day.

Once you’ve selected your vendors and submitted your deposits, you have made a serious investment. Wedding insurance protects your investment throughtout the planning process, and the event itself. Consider these events that are covered in your wedding insurance policy.

*the caterer or your reception venue closes down unexpectedly before your wedding
*your wedding photographs are damaged or lost
*a family or wedding party member is injured or becomes ill or dies
*lost or stolen wedding rings*
*your wedding attire (if your dress is damaged or fails to arrive)

Sorry kids, you’re out of luck if either of you gets cold feet. Changing your mind at the last minute is not covered by wedding insurance.

Just like any other type of insurance, you can purchase wedding insurance in a number of different policies. When compared to the cost of the event itself, wedding insurance is relatively inexpensive and as important to your special day as your bridal gown, cake and flowers. Whether you are having a destination wedding or a large wedding in your home town it is a good idea to purchase insurance for your wedding and a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Animal Attacks On Children: What You Need To Know

August 28th, 2008 by HuthaifasBlog6397

Studies show that children have the best chance of being bitten. Before a child turns 15, an animal has bitten nearly half. The vast majority of attacks happen to kids less than 9 years of age. By examining canine tendencies, most bites can be thwarted. It is true that most animals are safe, but some times dogs can have their own agendas. It is imperative that we educate our children to be on the look out for situations they must avoid.

There is rarely a good reason for a dog biting a child, but learning the mindset, from the animals’ point of view, may be helpful in evading aggressive animals. Here are some stats from a well-known university, which were based over a three-year period.

Of all K9 bites on children under four years of age, most were bitten in early May. Sixty percent were bitten on the head, neck and face, 90 percent were bitten in their own home, 40% were attacked by their own dog and 60 percent of the dogs had never bitten before.

Of all K9 bites on children over four years of age but less then 17 years old, most were bitten in early July. Eighteen percent were bitten on the head, neck and face, 38 percent were bitten in their own home, 18% were attacked by their own dog and 50 percent of the dogs had never bitten before.

This poses many questions…

All dogs are capable of biting, but the majority wont if you act accordingly.

Be sure to pay attention to the body language of a dog. If a dog has an aggressive demeanor do not approach it. Often you can tell an aggressive dog but the following signs: Ears are stiff, body is tense, tall is high.

Dogs that have assumed either a defensive or offensive threat posture frequently have a critical zone . A child is safe around this zone until entering the imaginary circle the dog has projected. The problem is that this zone varies between dogs and can even be different for the same dog if the situation changes. So it’s impossible for humans to accurately determine the critical zone. The shy or fearful dog adopts a defensive threat posture. It is hesitant, easily frightened, timid, tends to avoid certain persons or things. Frequently, these traits are not noticed until the dog encounters a new situation. The dog might assume elements of the defensive threat posture when frightened.

How do you stop your child from being attacked?

- Avoid pack dogs
- If confronted, do not run away or scream.
- Always ask an owner if it’s okay to pet their dog
- Always let a dog sniff your hand before petting them.

Animals and children are capable of living in harmony, but it’s the parents’ job to teach their children. If you conform to the following information, you and your kids will be safer!

ER (Season 4) DVD Review

August 28th, 2008 by HuthaifasBlog6397

Nominated for 25 Golden Globes and 110 Emmys, including 7 for Outstanding Drama Series, ER has long been one of the best prime-time shows on television. Premiering in September 1994 on NBC, the hour-long hospital drama vividly illustrates the intensity and fast-paced stress endemic to hospital emergency rooms across America. Brought into being by Michael Crichton - famous Hollywood insider, novelist, and brains behind such films as Jurassic Park, Twister, and Timeline - ER fulfills its creator’s ultimate vision (it took over a decade of pitching the show before network executives bit) for a close-to-life glimpse of the technology and the humanity omnipresent in the ER. Since its inception, many cast members have passed through the halls of ER, many of them having gone on to become big stars in Hollywood…

ER follows the exploits of a group of emergency room staff who work in a busy Chicago hospital. The show attempts to examine every detail of the ER experience. From the exhilaration of saving a life to the tedium caused by mountains of paperwork, all the highs and lows are covered. In the show’s first year, a number of regular faces staffed the ER. Doctors Mark Greene (Anthony Edwards), Peter Benton (Eriq La Salle), Douglas Ross (George Clooney), and Susan Lewis (Sherri Stringfield) were regulars in the ER along with Head Nurse Carol Hathaway (Julianna Margulies) and Benton’s medical student understudy (and later ER doctor), John Carter (Noah Wyle)… Any given episode tends to run multiple plot lines throughout the show, interweaving scenes in short snippets intended to heighten audience emotion and create the aura of a stress-laden atmosphere. The show’s high drama, coupled with subplots of the staffers’ personal lives and the display of cutting edge medical technology, combine to make ER one of most adrenaline-inducing programs in television history…

The ER (Season 4) DVD features a number of dramatic episodes including the season premiere Ambush in which the ER is put in the spotlight when it’s chosen as the site for the filming of television documentary. Trauma specialist Elizabeth Corday (Alex Kingston) joins the staff of the ER while Carter begins his residency. Meanwhile, the usual tragic cases pour into the ER, such as a man left paralyzed after trying to break up a gangland fight… Other notable episodes from Season 4 include Fathers and Sons in which Doug travels to California to settle his father’s estate while Mark goes with him to visit his San Diego family for the first time in years, and A Bloody Mess in which Dr. Corday performs an experimental procedure on a patient without getting the required permissions first…

Business Travel Advice

August 27th, 2008 by HuthaifasBlog6397

To some, the idea of traveling to Los Angeles one weekend and Bangkok the next for business sounds exciting and exotic.

However, 2 a.m. red-eye flights, expense account over-eating, short weekends and most importantly the time spent away from families can get old quickly.

Business trips are an important part of many careers and are inevitable. Business travel shouldn’t be seen as a chore; it allows you the opportunity to travel to places you might not normally visit and to do so practically for free - so why not make the most of it?

There are several ways to enjoy your business trips. First, consider bringing along spouses, boyfriends/girlfriends, children or the entire family and extending your business trip to include fun vacation time. The flight and hotel are already paid, the only extra costs that would incur would be airline tickets for anyone coming along and the cost for the extra days spent away. Many hotels don’t even charge extra for children. However, before taking along other people on business, especially children, make sure first that it is okay with the boss. Second, make sure you’ll have time to spend with anyone traveling with you and that not all your time will be spent in meetings.

The truth is, the more you enjoy business travel - the more relaxed you’ll be for any meetings or presentations. In fact, your company may even see this as a good thing. They realize business trips aren’t always fun, therefore the more you enjoy going on them, the more willing you will be to go on more in the future. Also, if you travel often to one destination for business, the more sightseeing you do within the city, the more familiar you’ll be with the location making it easier to relate and talk with local executives.

If extending the trip or bringing along family isn’t an option, there are other ways to make business travel more fun and less of a chore. First of all, visit the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Web site for the city you will be traveling to on business. The Web sites give tons of information on the sightseeing opportunities and often will have sample travel itineraries. Also, greeter programs are popping up in many major cities like Chicago and New York. A greeter program allows you to be paired up with a local, bilingual tour guide who can show you around the city. The perks of greeter programs are that they can be arranged at whatever time works for you and they oftentimes are free.

Hotel concierges are extremely familiar with the city within which they work and the immediate area by the hotel. Whether you have a free afternoon, an hour to spare, or are just looking for somewhere to eat, the hotel concierge can inform you of many fun, local activities to partake in.

Last, you don’t have to limit your business travel fun to just simple sightseeing. Try taking a cooking class one evening or do something daring like skydiving or swimming with the sharks. The options are limitless.

Never before has such a book hit the market!
– T. Wilsom

Without Money to be Made Online I?d be lost!
– Sue Hemmings

A few years ago, before online marketing became my full time job, I had the same life as most other workers, I worked. The thing about work is that you don?t like to do it. Often people associate work with a ?job? and a ?boss.? But wouldn?t you like to be your OWN boss?

It wasn?t until I ran across this booklet that my online career started to sky rocket. Today I?m going to compare this book to others, and exaplin why exactly it?s the only book I recommend to my trainees and colleagues.

First of all, numbers count. In the game of online marketing and selling products, whether they?re third party or your own, people like numbers. Everyone likes to get 2 free bonuses with their purchase. When you buy Money to Be Made Online, you get the bonuses, plus more. The book is filled with over 877 tips and tricks, that have taken years to accumulate.

Instead of scouring the internet, signing up for mass email lists, dealing with ridiculous amounts of spam, and even spending money on countless eBooks, I recommend everyone I know in the industry to one simple book. There are many unique attributes that I wont go into here, but I want to let you know just a few.

It?s not about the quantity of the tips or tricks, but the quality. Each chapter builds on the last, introducing a perspective of online marketing rarely seen. This book is changing how people do things. What took me nearly 4 years to learn, is detailed in this book in ways that surpass my level of expression! It?s simplistic yet detailed, straight forward and matter of fact. This book is no joke.

Every time I read the book I learn something new, and I?m always referencing to it. Without this I would?ve been a lost dog with no cause. However my business was saved because I went from A to Z, cover to cover, and applied what I learned.

I want to take some time to stress the importance of knowledge. Knowledge in this industry is what saves time and money. But more importantly it?s about how you use that knowledge. Money to Be Made Online not only tells you ?what?s up,? but ?how to.? With Money to Be Made Online your business will experience a change like never before.

I personally use the book as a reminder of all the hard work I?ve done, and the responsibility I have to my customers to provide the best of services. That?s what it basically comes down to in any business, service.

With Money to Be Made Online I learned about the concepts that drive business, what makes people buy your product, and why people don?t buy your product. It?s not about convincing people to buy, but the way you ?let them know? that you provide a service is crucial.

One of the most important lessons I learned from Money to Be Made Online is that you can?t pressure the customer, but by hard work and real quality products, your business will grow. You must always remember, you serve the customer, and in exchange the return a piece of their services, in cash form. They too have services they provide to other people.

All in all I?d recommend this book to just about anybody. Not only has it helped me online, but it opened my eyes to what life is about. We?re here to serve, and I do it with pride!
